What’s a Blog?

12.06.07

What’s a blog?Blogs started in 1994 as online diaries. Entries are listed from the most current on top followed by earlier entries. The term “blog” was coined by Peter Merholz who broke the word “weblog” into the phrase “we blog.” The “we” was dropped and the history of blogging began.

Blogs are often grouped into two categories, genre and media. However, blogs are not media or topic specific, the most popular blogs use multiple media sources. For example someone can have a personal blog that discusses only their travels, and their media is pictures rather than words. Another example would be a music company’s blog that is updated by their signed artists via video.

The possibilities for personal or corporate expression are unlimited!

Here’s a selection of different types of blogs with a description of topic, media, and how they work.
